The Emmet County Board of Supervisors on Jan. 2 approved a collective bargaining agreement with AFSCME Local 1639 covering county dispatchers that includes a 3% wage increase for FY2025 and another 3% for FY2026.
Sheriff Schultes presented the agreement and explained the wage schedule approved by the board. The approved steps are: FY2025 — hire rate $21.17, six-month rate $22.37, one-year rate $23.57; FY2026 — hire rate $21.81, six-month rate $23.04, one-year rate $24.28. Jeffrey Quastad moved to approve the agreement and Timothy Schumacher seconded; the motion passed with all supervisors recorded as voting aye.
Why it matters: the wage increases formalize compensation steps for dispatchers and will be reflected in county payroll; the sheriff also raised concerns about current staffing shortages in his department, a condition that supervisors noted during the meeting but did not resolve with additional staffing directives at that time.
The agreement was presented during regular business and approved by motion; the board’s minutes record the contract adoption and the adopted wage schedule. No follow-up timeline for recruitment or additional staffing measures was set during the Jan. 2 meeting.
The Auditor’s Office filed the adopted contract action in the meeting minutes; implementation will involve the County Human Resources office and the Sheriff’s Office to apply the new wage steps.
