Summary
The Mitchell Community Schools Board of Trustees unanimously approved the consent agenda, a summer learning lab partnership with the Boys & Girls Club, acceptance of track-and-field sponsorships and the hire of Bobby Owens as head football coach.
The Mitchell Community Schools Board of Trustees unanimously approved a set of routine items, accepted local donations for athletics and voted to hire Bobby Owens as the district’s next head football coach.
Board staff told trustees the consent agenda was included in members’ packets and asked for approval; the board voted 5-0 to adopt it. The board then approved a recommendation to continue summer learning labs in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club. "This is the same program that Boys and Girls Club did last summer for us, and it was very successful at Burris," a staff member said. The motion to approve the summer program passed 5-0.
Trustees also accepted a bundle of donations earmarked for the district’s 2026 special track-and-field sponsorships. Staff read the list of donors and amounts: American Legion Post 250 of Mitchell ($250); Bedford Federal Savings Bank ($250); Orange County Fiber LLC ($200); J Aid Benefits LLC ($100); Hoosier Hills Credit Union ($100); Ace Hardware Ben Franklin ($100); Reynolds Construction ($100); Tri Kappa Gamma Epsilon ($100); Crafted House custom T-shirts ($50); Olivia Stoll (Shoals teacher, $50); Roots RV and Sales ($50); Mitchell Grissom Kiwanis Club ($50); James Insurance Agency ($50); and Knights of Columbus of Lagodie ($50). The board voted 5-0 to accept the donations as presented.
On personnel, staff reported that Mr. Pine recommended Bobby Owens for the head football coach position and summarized Owens’s background, including a decade as a varsity defensive coordinator and prior coaching at Swansboro High School in North Carolina and a high school in Hawaii. "We would gladly recommend mister Bobby Owens as our head football coach," the staff member said. The board approved the hire unanimously.
The meeting concluded with routine business and a brief welcome to an attendee named George. The board also announced an executive session would follow the public meeting.
