Council approves half-court basketball at Legacy Ranch after neighborhood survey shows majority support

The El Centro City Council voted unanimously to add a painted half-court basketball facility at Legacy Ranch park.
Adriana Nava presented the conceptual design and survey results: 63–64 neighborhood responses with roughly 70% support and 56% saying they were very likely to use the court. Nava told council the half-court is intended to serve teens and young adults, reduce street play and require a smaller footprint and no dedicated new lighting. “This park doesn’t have amenities for teens or young adults… the nearest public court is over a mile away at Buena Vista Park,” Nava said, adding the project was budgeted at $100,000 for the fiscal year.
Council members and residents discussed concerns about noise, parking and proximity to adjacent houses; staff said the proposed design and minimum setback distances are intended to limit impacts and pointed to a similar site at Buena Vista Park that has produced few neighbor complaints. A resident and regular commenter, Pierre Rodriguez, voiced conditional support while flagging concerns about absentee owners and long-term upkeep.
A motion to approve the project passed 5-0. Staff said the project will be designed to minimize impact on adjacent properties, will not add new court lighting, and will proceed under the existing budget allocation.
