Huntington County board approves finances, K–12 science adoption and multiple technology and facilities contracts

The Huntington County Community School Corporation board used its March 23 meeting to clear multiple budget, curriculum, technology and facilities items in a series of largely unanimous votes.
On finance, Chief Financial Officer Michelle Babcock reported an education fund cash balance of "a little over 14,000,000" for February, an operations fund balance of about $1,700,000 and a rainy‑day balance of $3,900,000. The board approved the February financial reports by unanimous vote.
On technology, district staff asked the board to award two contracts for an E‑rate Category 2 network refresh. District staff said the FCC discount for this cycle was 80 percent, leaving roughly $113,000 of the project as district out‑of‑pocket cost; the board approved the awards 7–0.
Curriculum staff recommended adoption of a K–12 science curriculum for 2026–27. An earlier estimate near $498,700 was reduced after negotiation; the district reported a new total of $449,409.50 (a stated savings of about $49,290). Trustees approved the adoption 7–0.
The board also approved multiple facilities actions: awarding an exterior building maintenance project across several campuses to ACB General Contractors (low bid $1,325,000), approving Viridian Architecture's design terms for that project, awarding a phased repaint of the Huntington North High School arena ceiling to ACB (low bid $2,052,000 for phase 1) and approving Meridian Architecture for design and administration of the repaint project. All votes on these items were unanimous. Board members said much of the cost savings came from rebidding and phasing large projects.
Trustees approved a consent agenda covering routine items and donations but removed item H14 (hiring three summer technology interns) to be brought back April 27; a board member said the interns have historically been high‑school students paid about $15 an hour.
Board members closed the meeting with remarks on governance topics and professional development. No additional public commenters addressed the board at the meeting; the board adjourned after the final votes.
Votes recorded in the meeting transcript were predominantly unanimous (7–0) across the listed budget, technology and facilities items; the superintendent appointment vote was the primary contested tally (6–1).
