Board recognizes cheer, dance champions and awards two seed grants

The Lake Central School Corporation board on April 20 paused routine business to recognize student achievements in cheer and dance and to announce two seed grants awarded by the Lake Central Education Foundation.
A coach for the Lake Central cheer squad reported the team was state runner-up in two Indiana Association divisions in November and won the Hoosier Cheer Championships in the game-day division, noting assistant coach John Powers’ choreography and judging background. "We were state runner-up in both divisions," the coach said.
Kevin Mathis, Lake Central’s dance coach, described a sweep of regional competitions and reported national results: "This year, we took it back, and we were also the national champions in palm this year," he said, adding second-place finishes in jazz and third in hip hop.
Foundation presenters announced two seed grants for 2026 totaling $3,938.53 impacting roughly 390 students. One grant will fund a high-school-to-elementary 'buddy' art exchange where fourth‑grade students will design creatures and high-school students will construct them in 3‑D; the second ($2,514) will fund hands-on nuclear chemistry activities and specialized equipment for high school students to increase exposure to the subject and potential career pathways.
The board and administration congratulated students, coaches and teachers and arranged photographs following the recognitions.
