The Fort Atkinson City Council on April 21 performed the first reading of an annexation ordinance to bring a portion of 744 Jones Avenue into the city to allow a proposed wastewater pretreatment facility to locate wholly within Fort Atkinson.
Director Drager explained the site currently straddles a property line between the Town of Koshinan and Fort Atkinson; the annexation would transfer the relevant parcel area into city limits so the proposed pretreatment/wastewater facility could be sited and permitted. Staff told the council no zoning amendment is required because the majority of the site already carries appropriate zoning, and the city’s consultant recommended approval. Drager said there is no anticipated direct financial impact to the city from the annexation itself but described operational benefits from reduced demand on the city’s public infrastructure by pretreating wastewater on the private site before discharge.
A council member moved and seconded the first reading and directed the city manager to prepare the ordinance for a second and possible third and final reading at the May 5 council meeting. The council carried the motion by voice vote.
