Resident reports hazardous homeless encampment near Centennial Park, asks council for help

Jay McLaren, who identified himself as a Ward 2 resident, addressed the North Platte City Council during public comment on April 21 about an abandoned homeless encampment south of his home near Centennial Park.
McLaren said the 100-by-100-foot site had several tents that were abandoned and left with "hundreds of pounds of trash," including biohazardous materials such as needles and human waste. He and his fiancé cleaned the site and asked the council to consider modifying city ordinances or other actions to keep the riverfront clean and safe for community use.
"We're hoping that the council could help us to maintain that through modified ordinances," McLaren said. The mayor acknowledged the concern and said the item would likely appear on a future council agenda in about a month for further consideration.
The council did not take immediate action at the meeting but indicated staff would place the issue on a future agenda for follow-up.
