Delegation extends scholarship deadline, plans presentations and local media outreach; student to attend Scripps Spelling Bee

At the March 20 meeting, the Charles County delegation agreed to extend the application deadline for a student scholarship/presentation opportunity and to reschedule presentations so more students could participate.

A staff member proposed moving the deadline and delegates agreed. Delia Patterson suggested "another 2 weeks" and that presentations occur after an event described in the meeting as "sign and die." The group asked staff to update and redistribute the flyer and coordinate the final presentation dates with all delegates and the Waldorf West Library.

A committee member asked whether the opportunity was limited to high-school seniors. "It's only for seniors, right?" the committee member asked; Davis and others confirmed the program targets seniors this year but said they could consider expanding eligibility in future years. Delegates discussed that scholarship funds "get recycled," which one participant said constrained how awards are disbursed this cycle.

Delegate Davis noted local recognitions the delegation planned to highlight at upcoming presentations: the Henry E. Lackey High School boys basketball team and student Ethan Atonga, who will represent Charles County at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. "Ethan will represent Charles County at the Scripps National Spelling Bee contest," Davis said.

Delia Patterson said she had contacted the local paper because she was concerned that coverage of the delegation's Annapolis activities was limited and urged sharing photos and media contacts. "We need to really send some photos to the local media," she said; delegates agreed to supply images and contacts.

The delegation did not set a single unambiguous calendar date in the meeting transcript; staff agreed to coordinate date options and confirm a new deadline and presentation schedule to interested applicants and participating schools.
