Brunswick Board spotlights student art and music in new boardroom

The Brunswick Board of Education opened its March 16 meeting in a new boardroom by recognizing student accomplishments in the visual and performing arts.

Mrs. Aller, who introduced the presentations, said the district had 56 student artists whose work had been displayed at the Board office and noted several students whose pieces were selected for a statewide Youth Art Month exhibition. "Arts is a huge part of education here in Brunswick City School District," she said, praising art teachers and describing the statewide selection process.

Students recognized by name included Lata, Emma, Ruby, Kaya, John, Aubrey Craley (flag contest second place) and others who received certificates and posed for photos. Mrs. Aller also highlighted a group of student artworks that were selected to hang in the Ohio Statehouse.

Student leaders then presented on Music in Our Schools Month. "It's to raise awareness for our music education's lasting positive impact on child development," said Bree Warsencroft, a junior and drum major, listing benefits from language development to leadership skills. Ellie Trubisky, a drum major, described the marching band's season — including an invitation to the Buckeye Invitational and a fourth-place finish among 34 bands — and the role of fundraising events such as the Brunswick Sound Spectacular.

Other students detailed middle-school band growth ("98% of sixth grade band students have never played before," one student said), large-group and solo/ensemble opportunities, honors ensembles and pit orchestra experiences. Choir student Kaylin Hulbert described top ensembles such as Madrigals and upcoming spring musical performances and related adjudicated events.

The board thanked students and parents for attending; the presentations concluded and the meeting moved on to public comment and the business agenda.
