Calhoun County seeks $291,000 state trust-fund grant to rebuild Kimball Pines Park

The Calhoun County Board of Commissioners authorized submission of a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund application on July 16 seeking $291,000 toward a $388,000 plan to rehabilitate Kimball Pines Park.
Community Development Program Manager Doug Ferrall said the project would include a new park entrance, expanded parking, habitat restoration and updates to restroom facilities to meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. He told the board a 25% local match ($97,000) is required and outlined potential local match sources: roughly $32,000 in insurance proceeds from a 2011 straight-line windstorm, $3,000 from ITC, and approximately $15,600 the Calhoun County Trailway Alliance is attempting to raise. Ferrall said the Battle Creek Community Foundation had agreed to match funds the county could not raise.
Administrator/Controller Kelli Scott thanked staff for pursuing funding and described the project as a significant transformation for park property damaged by the windstorm. The board approved the grant authorization unanimously (Res.109-2020).
If the grant is awarded, county staff will coordinate remaining match fundraising and project design and will return to the board with implementation details.
