Calhoun County proclaims August 2020 as National Women’s Suffrage Month

On Aug. 6 the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners read and adopted a proclamation declaring August 2020 as National Women’s Suffrage Month in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment.
Commissioner Jake Smith read the proclamation, which highlights the historic struggles for voting rights and notes continuing efforts to ensure broad voter participation. The motion to proclaim August 2020 as National Women’s Suffrage Month passed on a 7-0 roll call vote (Res. 122-2020).
Judith Douglas, president-elect of the Battle Creek Branch of the American Association of University Women, submitted a written statement for the record that thanked the board and recalled the local and national history of the suffrage movement.
