Calhoun County renews three-year contract with regional behavioral health entity; one abstention

The Calhoun County Board voted on Aug. 6 to renew its intergovernmental contract with Southwest Michigan Behavioral Health (SWMBH) for three years.
Administrator/Controller Kelli Scott described the item as "a three-year renewal of the existing contract with SWMBH and that no substantive changes were included," noting the contract establishes the Policy Oversight Board that approves annual PA2 alcohol tax budgets for prevention and treatment services across the region. Commissioner Gary Tompkins moved to approve the renewal; the roll call vote recorded six yes votes and one abstention from Commissioner Jake Smith (Res. 124-2020).
Scott said the region served by SWMBH contains eight counties required by state designation to contract with a regional entity to oversee federal and state funding along with locally collected PA2 tax dollars. The approval authorizes the county board chair to sign the contract and continues county participation in the regional oversight structure.
