Calhoun County millages renewed; county opens $700,000 RFP for senior projects

Voters in Calhoun County approved two local millages in the Aug. 4 election, the county’s Senior Millage and a Parks Millage, and county officials on Aug. 6 outlined how the new revenue will be used.
Helen Guzzo, Calhoun County Senior Services Manager, told the Board that “the countywide Senior Millage ballot proposal passed on Tuesday, August 4 with a vote of 82 percent approval rating.” She said the county is expanding funding for food distribution programs and Meals on Wheels, though some in-person senior programs remain closed: the Miriam Burch Adult Day Care Center has not reopened, and Heritage Commons in Marshall and The Forks Senior Center in Albion are continuing outreach by phone.
Guzzo said the County Purchasing Department has issued a Request for Proposals for strategic projects funded from a new one-time pool of approximately $700,000. According to staff, award amounts are expected to range from $5,000 to $25,000 to support creative, one-time solutions and enhancements rather than ongoing programs.
Parks Manager Doug Ferrell reported the Parks Millage passed with 61 percent approval. Ferrell said he will be meeting with Administrator/Controller Kelli Scott and finance staff in the coming weeks to finalize implementation plans for 2021.
County officials emphasized that the RFP funds are intended for one-time projects rather than ongoing program commitments and that further details about application deadlines and evaluation criteria will be posted by the County Purchasing Department.
