To avoid recurring contract issues and to provide local employment, staff proposed reallocating $73,450 from the cleaning contract to fund two part‑time custodial positions (one at the office and one at operations), each at up to 30 hours per week and roughly $18.50 per hour.
Valerie explained the decision: "We would just reallocate that to pay for this a part time custodian here as well as 1 at maintenance ... the starting salary for those is around $18.50. It would be 30 hours or less per week at each location." She noted some services such as floor stripping and carpet cleaning would still be bid out to specialty companies as needed.
Board members discussed whether two part‑timers would be sufficient and the challenge of attracting local contractors who can provide required insurance. A member recommended advertising for the positions if the board and council approve. The motion to approve the personnel approach and forward it to council was seconded and approved by voice vote.
