Anamosa City Council upheld a peace officer’s designation that an animal is "vicious" and ordered the animal removed from the city after hearing an appeal on Oct. 14, 2024.
David Miller appealed the designation and presented to the council during the meeting at the Anamosa Library & Learning Center. The council also heard from the chief of police and from the owners of the dog that had been attacked. After reviewing the facts and circumstances presented, the council affirmed the officer’s action and ordered the removal of the animal from the city.
The motion to affirm the peace officer’s designation and require removal carried on a roll call vote with all members present voting in the affirmative (Weimer, D. Smith, Gombert, Crump, Tuetken). The council’s action follows the local enforcement process for dangerous or vicious animals as explained by the city’s law enforcement representative during the hearing.
Mayor Rod Smith presided over the hearing. The council did not detail additional remedial steps in the minutes beyond the order for removal; no appeal outcome beyond the council’s action was recorded in the meeting minutes.
The council proceeded to other agenda items after issuing the order.
