Washington council authorizes bids for splash park and sports‑field lights

Council authorized the Recreation Director to solicit bids for a splash park at 7th Street Park behind the Bobby Andrews Recreation Center; the agenda listed an initial estimate of $383,000 and staff said the scope would be reduced before bid to meet budget constraints. The Recreation Advisory Committee had reviewed possible sites and recommended the 7th Street Park as the preferred location.
Council also authorized solicitation of bids to install lights on eight soccer fields at the Susiegray McConnell Sports Complex. Staff presented cost estimates ranging from about $400,000 to light four fields to roughly $800,000 to light all eight; the council noted last fall’s youth soccer participation exceeded 600 players and that lighting would enable weekday practices, adult leagues and tournament hosting. Councilmember Richard Brooks moved to authorize the solicitation and Councilmember Lou Hodges seconded; motion passed unanimously among members present. The agenda notes these projects would be funded by fund balance or remaining American Rescue Plan funds.
Both actions instruct staff to solicit bids; no contract awards or final budgets were approved on Jan. 9.
