PASADENA, Texas — At its Feb. 25 meeting, the Pasadena ISD Board of Trustees publicly honored parents, district staff, students and law enforcement credited with helping to protect students during a Feb. 1 incident at Pasadena Memorial High School.
Superintendent Dr. Powell described the interruption of an indoor drumline competition by a suspect who struck one person before being subdued and arrested by the Pasadena ISD police. "Thanks to their heroic actions and fast response, lives were truly saved that night," Dr. Powell said as he introduced honorees.
Recognized individuals included parents and staff who intervened (Juan Lopez and Corey Veasey), four fathers from Pearland ISD (Abram Trevino, Joe Sanchez, Polo Castillo and Adam Currow) who helped secure the suspect, and students from Pasadena Memorial who administered first aid (Makayla Talavera, Charles Mitchell and Jorge Garza). Dr. Powell also recognized Pasadena ISD police and multiple law enforcement partners that responded.
Mayor Jeff Wagner presented a proclamation and thanked the honorees. "As mayor of this great city, today, each one of y'all, we're gonna name it y'all's day here in Pasadena," Wagner said, presenting the city's appreciation.
As part of the recognitions, the McDonald's Texas Invitational (MTI) presented funds to support classroom mini-grants. Kirk Lewis, chairman of the MTI steering committee, said MTI has given about $3.7 million to Pasadena and Deer Park education foundations since its inception. "I'm proud tonight to present the Pasadena ISD Education Foundation a check for $223,938," Lewis said; district leaders accepted the donation on behalf of the foundation.
Why it matters: The board used public recognition to highlight emergency response, student training (HOSA/health-occupation skills) and community partnerships. The MTI gift will fund teacher mini-grants administered through the Pasadena ISD Education Foundation.
What happens next: The district will host a VIP reception for honorees and the foundation will allocate the MTI funds according to its mini-grant process.
