Board asks staff to study workforce-housing options on district land

Trustee Fox said districts across California have pursued workforce-housing partnerships and urged the district to explore models that avoid the district acting as the landlord. "As long as the district's not the landlord, that is the key," Fox said, describing partnerships that combine district property, city participation and outside developers.
Staff noted AB 1021 has removed some barriers and that a feasibility approach would include physical-site assessment, market and salary analysis, partnership models, and an architectural pre-design. The board directed staff to return with a scope for a feasibility study to explore whether district-owned property could support affordable housing for teachers and other essential workers.
No formal motion was taken; trustees asked staff to return with a work plan and potential funding or partnership options for future consideration.
