The meeting opened with tributes to longtime staff members and recognition of district nutrition programming that has attracted national attention.
Several speakers paid tribute to teachers and staff who are retiring after decades of service. The Chair introduced multiple honorees and described their years of service, for example noting that one honoree had "32 years of excellent service" and another "36 years of excellent service to the district and the community." Speakers emphasized the retirees'commitment to English learner students, special education, extracurricular programs and mentorship of other staff.
Speaker 4 delivered a detailed presentation on the district's nutrition education and enrichment activities. The presenter described hands'on classroom activities (students making orange juice and hummus), an emphasis on exposure so children try new foods, and a pilot model for featuring a "school of the month." The presenter said the program was "nationally recognized by USDA" and named partnerships with Action for Healthy Kids and the Chef & Foundation for Innovation in School Nutrition Education (transcript references). She also noted that the program was featured by the Institute of Child Nutrition.
Board members thanked staff for the work and for volunteer support at school events. The Chair and others also recognized Amanda for organizing graduation activities and raised operational and recognition items for future discussion.
Next steps: the board acknowledged the retirees and planned a celebration; staff will continue to expand nutrition partnerships and share program materials with other districts.
