Heard County says Old Jail restoration will require historically approved contractors; RFP coming

During new business on April 19, 2022, Commissioner Gwen Caldwell requested an update on Heard County's Old Jail. Chairman Lee Boone said the structure is primarily brick and lacks beams or other supports for the roof, and he reminded the board that restoration work must be performed by contractors approved by the historical register. Boone said the county will issue an RFP for bids soon.
The board did not select a contractor or set a budget at the meeting. Commissioners amended the agenda earlier in the meeting to add the Old Jail item and directed staff to prepare the RFP process in accordance with historical-register requirements.
