Summary
Students and Principal Danny Root presented a promotional video and spoke to trustees about Parkway Sports and Health Science Academy's CTE pathways, student engagement efforts and a planned December CTE fair, highlighting expanded pathways to high school and career readiness.
Principal Danny Root and student leaders from Parkway Sports and Health Science Academy presented to the La Mesa‑Spring Valley School Board on Sept. 30, describing the academy's career‑themed classes, extracurriculars and community partnerships.
A short video introduced Parkway's focus areas and student opportunities: sports medicine, exercise science, marine biology, design innovation, band and dance, and clubs ranging from volleyball to yearbook. Student voices in the video and at the meeting emphasized connection and opportunities to pursue career pathways.
At the board meeting, student leader Gabriel Lederer introduced himself: "My name is Gabriel Lederer. I'm the school's ASB president, and one of my favorite things about Parkway is a wide variety of sports," he said, listing athletic facilities and after‑school supports. Other student representatives described electives, safety and the yearbook program.
Principal Root told the board the academy has strengthened student engagement through events such as club rush and spirit weeks, has added a student senate to amplify student voice, and is refining CTE pathways with feeder high schools. He said the district plans a CTE fair in December to help eighth graders evaluate high school options.
Root thanked staff and families for their support and introduced assistant administrators and parent volunteers who attended the meeting. Trustees thanked the students and principal for the presentation and paused briefly to allow Parkway guests to depart.
The presentation was informational; no board action was required.
