Students thank Wayne school board; district proclaims School Board Recognition Month and honors retirees

Students from Anthony Wayne Middle School's House Council attended the Wayne Board of Education meeting on Jan. 22 to thank board members for their service. Anara Ahmed, overall House Council president, told the board the students appreciate the opportunities and support the board's decisions provide to Wayne schools.
"On behalf of the students, families, and staff of AWMS, we thank you for everything you do," Anara Ahmed said, urging the board to take pride in its role shaping students' futures.
The superintendent read a proclamation designating January 2026 as School Board Recognition Month, noting that the Wayne board is one of 581 local school boards in New Jersey and commending volunteer board members for their service. The superintendent also highlighted the district newsletter and announced that the 2027 school calendar would appear as an action item on a future agenda.
The board used the meeting to recognize several long-serving employees who are retiring: Bassam (Sam) Mirza (head custodian), Wijun Ko (district accountant), Patty Coviello (administrative assistant to the superintendent), Cindy Salerno (paraprofessional and student advocate), Maria Monasterio (transportation, retiring Feb. 1, 2026), and Maria Macaron (educator). Speakers praised each employee's years of service, specific roles, and contributions to students and the district.
Board members also congratulated student-athletes for recent championships and reminded the public to watch district communications for updates about an expected weekend storm. The meeting adjourned after routine business.
The recognitions and student remarks were largely ceremonial and intended to highlight community connections and staff contributions rather than to direct new policy.
