The Hoboken Board of Education, meeting in March 2026, paused its ceremonial recognitions to note several items of district business and to hear public comment. Miss Lopez also said Gov. Murphy's budget address had been delivered earlier in the day and the district expected to receive its state aid numbers within the next two days; the board said it will schedule a public budget hearing once those figures arrive.
During committee reports, Facilities Committee chair (speaker 13) moved the consent agenda to approve items 13.01 (fire and safety drills) and 13.02 (facilities requests). The motion was seconded; during the roll call Miss Angley announced she would abstain on item 13.02 and vote yes on other items. Another member requested an abstention as recorded. The remaining voting members recorded yes votes and the motion passed.
Public comment included two substantive lines of concern. Patricia Waiters, who identified herself as a district employee and longtime Hoboken resident, asked the board to address a longstanding and serious situation she raised previously and said she had referred the matter to the attorney general's office. She described being wrongfully removed from a union leadership role, alleged defamation and discrimination, and asked for immediate board attention. Corporation counsel (speaker 19) responded in part that the public participation statement is intended to make clear the board is not responsible for what speakers say and does not limit speakers' First Amendment rights; he invited Ms. Waiters to provide additional information to the board.
A second commenter, Manuel Rivera Soler, asked how the public can find grant submission and award timelines on the district website, raised questions about stipends tied to the district musical ("School of Rock"), and asked about an off-cycle payment for snow removal. The superintendent and administration answered that grants are first submitted for approval and that, if awarded, the board will later approve acceptance of funds and committees will report on distribution and use. Regarding scaffolding and façade repairs, the superintendent said the district submitted a request to the Schools Development Authority (SDA), that the SDA had approved payment for the project and is now requesting additional documents; administration expects scaffolding removal beginning in the summer and facade work to start afterward.
The board adjourned after routine business. No formal action on resolution 12-01 was taken during this meeting beyond placing it on the agenda earlier in the day; a revised agreement is expected to return to the board for consideration.
