Board debate fails to move preliminary budget meeting; members stress Mountainside representation

The Berkeley Heights Board of Education debated whether to shift its March calendar and ease burdens on board members or preserve scheduled dates to ensure representation for Mountainside stakeholders.

At issue was a proposed amendment to resolution #3 to change the preliminary budget meeting from March 12 to March 16. Proponents said the later date would allow a Mountainside representative to attend and reduce overlap with other obligations; opponents said the later date conflicted with multiple members’ schedules and would leave the district with less preparation time ahead of statutory budget deadlines. The board attorney and administrators advised that the board must consider statutory filing timelines and the need for full committee participation for budget deliberations.

The amendment was put to roll call and failed. After the failed amendment several members urged closer coordination with Mountainside and asked the administration to seek ways to ensure the district’s preliminary budget consideration includes perspectives from all sending/receiving partners. The board agreed to ask Mountainside to send a representative to the public session of the preliminary budget meeting and to revisit calendar logistics as the state posts meeting notices and the board refines its hearing schedule.

The procedural outcome leaves the original calendar in place; staff and the policy committee were directed to support outreach and to provide any additional scheduling flexibility needed for quorum and representation.
