Students propose countywide Student Leadership Team; board treats proposal as first read

Student leaders from North Brunswick High School presented a first‑read proposal for a countywide Student Leadership Team intended to give students direct input on district policies.

A teacher introduced the presenters and named the student leaders (Stevie Chambers, Kira Morgan, Maddie Mummer and Maddie McNeely). The students described a 17‑member representative structure (proportional to each school's enrollment), an internal selection process with teacher interviews and safeguards for academics and behavior, and an elected leadership (president, vice president, secretary and committee leads).

"Our goal is really to work collaboratively with you guys and kind of add that student insight that you guys might not have directly from the students," one presenter told the board, describing aims such as improved student engagement, policy clarity and better school culture. The students proposed quarterly presentations to the board and monthly internal meetings for county‑level coordination.

Board members asked about logistics—meeting timing, impact on instructional time, academic and behavioral eligibility, and how student concerns would be routed when they are school‑specific versus district policy. District staff said the item was a first read and welcomed feedback; they will share the student FAQ and the draft manual with the board for further refinement.

The proposal was not on the consent agenda; the board treated it as an informational first reading and asked staff to return with any suggested edits.
