Moriarty-Edgewood board reviews VISTAs school performance data showing mixed gains

District staff showed the board the New Mexico Public Education Department’s VISTAs website and walked through local comparisons and subgroup trends during the Nov. 18 Moriarty-Edgewood School District board meeting.
Superintendent Viviano presented the highlights and asked the board to review the public dashboard. District staff said math proficiency rose from 23.3% to 27.2%, and that subgroup math growth improved notably — male students grew about 5 percentage points, economically disadvantaged students about 3.5 points, and students identified as homeless showed roughly a 13-percentage-point gain. At the same time, staff reported a decline in science proficiency of about 9 percentage points and a fall in English-learner reading growth of about 13 percentage points.
"Math proficiency overall increased from 23.3 to 27.2," a staff presenter said while navigating the dashboard. Board members stressed the importance of disaggregating the results and said they want cohort-level reports that track groups of students across grades rather than single-year snapshots.
District staff outlined several responses under consideration: strengthening tier 1 literacy instruction, maintaining aligned math curriculum and PLCs, targeted interventions for students with disabilities, graduation coaching for high-risk groups, and a credit-monitoring system called 'Level All' at the high school. Staff also said a math curriculum adoption process is forthcoming to identify high-quality instructional materials.
The board noted the data are now public on the VISTAs site and reminded members that there is an opportunity to review embargoed data with the PED before it goes live. Staff said they will continue to refine presentations and return with cohort analyses and other disaggregations requested by board members.
The board took no formal action on curriculum at the meeting; staff will return with additional materials and next steps.
