Westland sets budget hearing, approves consent items; mayor announces $2M for Fire Station 4 and $30,000 cybersecurity grant

At the meeting the council approved a slate of routine items and set a public hearing for the proposed 2026–27 budget on May 4, 2026. Administration recommended the May 4 date; Councilwoman Baumann moved to set the hearing and Councilman Sullivan supported the motion, which passed with no discussion.

The consent calendar approved minutes from the Feb. 17, 2026 regular meeting and study session, renewals and subscriptions for GIS and Civic Plus web hosting, a sole‑source appliance lease renewal for Darktrace Limited security equipment, several service subscription renewals and a bid award for professional services at the Mac Mayfield Municipal Golf Course. The council also approved payment of vouchers by motion.

In administration remarks, the mayor announced the city secured $2,000,000 in congressionally directed spending toward rebuilding Fire Station 4, funding the Southwest portion of the city, and thanked Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and Senator Alyssa Slotkin for their support. The mayor also said the city received $30,000 from the state and FEMA under a cybersecurity grant program to assess and improve municipal cybersecurity protections. "It'll certainly be an important piece of the funding stack," the mayor said of the Fire Station 4 funding.

The mayor announced two long‑time departmental retirements and said the administration has extended offers to fill those positions. He also publicized upcoming community events including a dog vaccination day and an Easter egg hunt and invited residents to register.
