Board approves tenor–bass choir course and splits Eagle Choir into treble and tenor–bass classes

The Arlington School District board approved a proposal to add a tenor–bass choir to Arlington High School’s course offerings and to revise the existing Eagle Choir to separate treble and tenor–bass ensembles.
Principal Merilee Herman and choir director Hunter Kleber presented the proposal, saying interest is strong: Kleber reported 21 incoming students have already signed up to take the class next year, including 12 students who are not currently in choir. He said the course would be open to grades 9–12 and carry two semester credits. Kleber said the change aims to support students whose voices change during puberty, create a non-audition entry point, and strengthen pipelines into auditioned ensembles.
Board members asked about cost and staffing. Kleber said the program would not require additional district funds for next year; the choir will use an existing AEA grant and do booster fundraising for optional items such as suit jackets. The board approved the new course and the Eagle Choir course revision by motion.
The changes were characterized as a curricular adjustment to expand access to choir and build stronger feeder opportunities into competitive ensembles.
