The MS4 Subcommittee dedicated a substantial portion of its Dec. 6 meeting to 2023 sampling-site planning, with special attention on Shelburne.
Adelaide Dumm of Winooski NRCD described coordination on sampling plans and recent outreach, including the fall Adopt-a-Drain program and planned winter workshops. Committee members turned to sampling logistics for Shelburne after staff said the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) plans to phase out the existing Munroe Brook sampling location near the golf course.
Karen Bates, representing DEC, told the committee the waterbody impairment in the area is primarily agricultural. In response, Dan Albrecht of CCRPC recommended pursuing tactical basin planning grants, which regional planning commissions (RPCs) and NRCDs can use to help fund monitoring and planning work. Adelaide Dumm said she will contact Chris Robinson (Shelburne) and DEC staff (Mel) to clarify whether DEC’s change will affect other sampling sites and to finalize local plans.
The committee agreed to include discussion of sampling-site choices on the Jan. 3 agenda and asked staff to follow up with Shelburne and DEC to confirm any changes to the 2023 sampling plan.
