Lewis Creek Association describes Ahead of the Storm program for LaPlatte watershed

Kate Kelly of the Lewis Creek Association presented an overview of the organization and its Ahead of the Storm (AOTS) program to the Chittenden County Clean Water Advisory Committee on Dec. 6.
Kelly said AOTS integrates data collection, planning, restoration and education as a holistic tool to identify and address water‑quality problems and habitat enhancement needs in the LaPlatte River watershed. She reviewed examples of stewardship projects funded through AOTS, including water sampling, invasive species removal and a landowner’s guide.
When Chair Annie Costandi asked how AOTS projects are funded, Kelly said most are supported by the Lake Champlain Basin Program or by DEC funding with some local match. Committee members asked about ongoing maintenance of installed projects; Andrea Morgante said operations and maintenance are typically handled by community partners and emphasized the need for solid maintenance agreements to ensure long‑term water‑quality benefits.
The Lewis Creek Association presentation provided context for basin project prioritization and emphasized that long‑term stewardship contracts and partner agreements are central to sustaining project benefits.
