The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board approved the 2027–28 traditional calendar and several related changes affecting school days and staff transfer timelines.
Administration presented the calendar process and noted state rules (start on the Monday closest to Aug. 26; minimum hours/days) and district choices to balance semesters and preserve required professional learning days. The board voted to adopt the calendar after brief questions about optional virtual teacher workdays during Thanksgiving week and flexibility around the day after Halloween.
Separately, the board approved administration’s request to revert May 12 (a runoff election day) back to a regular school day if the Board of Elections indicates the day is not needed, and to designate May 1 as a teacher work day using banked instructional hours. The board also approved moving the employee intent-to-transfer submission date from March 31 to June 15 for the 2026–27 and 2027–28 school years and extending final execution deadlines to July 15 of those years; staff said the request came from employees and community members concerned about potential school-closure impacts.
What’s next: Contract terms and calendar communication will be finalized by the communications team; administration will implement the adjusted transfer timeline and work with HR and school leaders to accommodate staff needs.
