CHCCS board approves $6.7 million local operating budget request to Orange County

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education on Wednesday voted to forward a $6.7 million local operating budget request to the Orange County Board of Commissioners.
Mr. Scott presented the request as the culmination of months of work, saying the package includes a continuation budget of about $3,000,000 that assumes a 4% salary increase for all employees, higher benefit costs and a 4% inflation factor for nonpersonnel items. In addition, the board-approved expansion request totals $3,700,000, which includes a 3% increase to classified and certified supplements and $1,000,000 targeted to a recurring curriculum fund.
Board members moved and approved the request by voice vote. Mr. Scott said staff will draft the county presentation and present it to the Board of County Commissioners on April 30.
Why it matters: Board members and the teacher organization that spoke during public comment said the local request is necessary preparation while state funding remains uncertain. The board framed the request as part of a multi-step budget process that will require county consideration and appropriation.
