Resident urges Fort Mill board to press state leaders on hazardous site near schools

Jared Morocco, a Fort Mill resident, told the school board March 17 that last week’s resolution opposing a hazardous industrial chemical operation near district schools must not end with a statement.
"What happens next?" Morocco asked the board, saying the resolution called on the governor, attorney general, General Assembly, county council and regulators to act but that he had seen "no timeline, no action, no explanation." He said hazardous materials remain on the site and that parents expected the board's resolution to trigger follow-up from state leaders.
Morocco framed the district’s resolution as a starting point for accountability rather than a final step: "A resolution should not be the end of the process. It should be the start of their accountability," he said, urging the board to request formal responses and timelines for removal of hazardous chemicals.
Board members did not take immediate action during public comment. The board’s public record shows the item was raised publicly but no new motion or formal next-step was recorded at the March 17 meeting.
