Public Works Director Gary Peters presented architectural renderings of Minnetrista’s new water treatment plant at the Feb. 2 City Council meeting and recommended an optional design change that would add decorative textured rock at all four corners for about $16,000.
Peters said the base bid calls for a sandblast finish and included wood-grain bump-outs, and the optional upgrade would extend the textured, colored rock up the corners of the building. "It's just a little under 16,000," Peters said, adding that the treatment gives the building "a little bit more nicer look to it." He said the firm that produced the renderings, AE2S, could provide a change order for council consideration.
Acting Mayor Kathleen Ruskin and council members indicated support for the look; Peters said he would return a change order on the Feb. 18 agenda as a consent item so any council member could pull it for separate discussion. He described construction timing as contingent on equipment arrival and soil/frost conditions: crews expect to bring equipment in within weeks and to complete exterior work before winter to allow interior work to continue.
The meeting did not include a formal vote on the design upgrade; Peters said staff would present the change order and associated cost detail on the Feb. 18 consent agenda if the council wants to proceed. The source of funds for an additional change order was not specified at the Feb. 2 meeting.
