Sharon Y. Parker told Detroit's Internal Operations Standing Committee on April 15 she was nominated to the Board of Zoning Appeals by Pro Tem Coleman Young and described her background in city government, journalism and work with the UAW.
"My name is Sharon Y Parker and, Pro Tem, Councilman, Coleman Young. He nominated me for the position," Parker told the committee. She said she is a lifelong Detroit resident currently living in District 4, has served on community boards and in party organizing and that she would "make decisions from examining the circumstances" brought to the board.
Committee members asked Parker about the board's role and whether she would resist granting variances of convenience; she said she would be prepared to say no when a variance was not justified by hardship. Member Vincent and Member Miller pressed her on respect for legacy residents and ensuring questions from residents are fully answered; Members expressed support for her appointment during the exchange.
There was a motion to move the nomination (line item 6) to formal session with a recommendation to approve. The committee carried the motion by unanimous consent and the nomination will be placed on the council's formal session agenda for final action.
Parker thanked the committee for its time and said she looks forward to continuing to serve the city if confirmed.
