The Gulfport City Council on the opening meeting of the year ratified Mayor Billy Hughes’s recommended slate of election‑commission appointments but faced vocal public calls for a deeper review of last year’s election.
Mayor Billy Hughes presented the slate — including Madeline Walker (absent), Farrell Allman (absent), Sammy Lee Wiseman (Ward 3), Teresa Youngblood (Ward 1) and Latham Zimmerman — saying the group reflected a balance of experience and community representation. Councilmember Sellers moved to approve the slate en banc; the motion carried by voice vote.
The ratification came amid criticism from residents who said the 2025 municipal election suffered organizational failures. ‘‘I would like to, see better organization of the handling of the election. It was too much chaos,’’ said Sammy Lee Wiseman, who was later introduced as one of the recommended commissioners and described problems with staffing and ballot availability during last year’s vote.
Another resident, Sandra Weiss, directly asked the council for an investigation into the election’s conduct. ‘‘This election did not go well and we can keep saying it did, but it didn’t,’’ Weiss told the council, citing committee resignations and errors she said undermined confidence.
Council members pressed for clarity and legal compliance. A council question about potential conflicts regarding Madeline Walker and a sitting judge was examined and the administration said there was no conflict; the mayor and council said they had checked that point before the vote.
The council approved the appointments by voice vote; no roll‑call tallies were recorded on the transcript. Councilmembers and the mayor said they would pursue improved training and earlier preparation for future municipal elections.
Next steps: The newly ratified election commissioners will be expected to participate in training and early planning for upcoming municipal elections; residents who requested an audit said they would provide documentation to officials.
