The proclamation emphasized growing concerns about fires tied to lithium‑ion batteries in household devices and urged three public steps: buy listed products, charge batteries safely and recycle them responsibly. The document cited a National Fire Protection Association report noting an increase in battery‑related fires and used that as the basis for public education recommendations.
Deputy Chief McCorkle accepted the proclamation on behalf of the department; Keating invited the firefighters forward for a photo. The mayor also used his remarks to list upcoming community safety and outreach events, including a fentanyl‑awareness CAM Walk and family events at the Gulfport Sportsplex.
The proclamation and the mayor’s remarks occurred during the meeting’s opening presentations; no formal council vote was required for the proclamation.
