New Prague hires cybersecurity consultant on six‑month trial to bolster citywide protections

The New Prague City Council authorized a six-month trial engagement with the Minnesota Security Consortium (MSC) to help the city meet state and federal cybersecurity standards and to guide the city’s IT contractor, CTS, on required security controls.
City staff said MSC has already worked with the police department to meet BCA cybersecurity standards and that the consortium can provide a documented set of controls (similar to NIST) and implementation recommendations for city systems. The proposed trial engagement was described as costing about $6,000 for six months and would produce a written checklist of controls and prioritized remediation steps.
"They'll give you the controls and help your IT team implement them," Brian Paulson said during public comment, describing how MSC provides a list of recommended controls and helps agencies measure compliance. Staff said MSC’s work for the police had shown value and that the consultant engagement could be paid from the IT services budget.
Council approved the motion to engage MSC on the trial basis (vote 5–0). Staff said MSC would produce a written report noting which controls are complete and which need work, so the city and CTS can implement changes to reach compliance with BCA and other standards.
