Mayor Charles L. Nicolai read a proclamation declaring October Domestic Violence Awareness Month and thanked Southern Valley Alliance for its work assisting survivors and victims.
Darlene Sawyer, a volunteer with Southern Valley Alliance, told the council the organization has moved to a new facility in Shakopee and has seen roughly a 20% increase in clients across Scott and Carver counties; she said SVA helped 35 people in New Prague in the past year and that the SVA hotline fields about 2,000 calls annually.
Sawyer described the hotline's role in crisis intervention, safety planning and referrals and asked for community support through volunteering and donations as funding declines continue to affect domestic violence service providers.
Council thanked Sawyer for the update and the mayor presented the proclamation recognizing the work of advocates and encouraging community engagement.
