Upshur County Commission adopts several proclamations, including telecommunicators week and child abuse prevention month

At its April 9 meeting the Upshur County Commission approved multiple proclamations addressing public safety communications, child abuse prevention, and sexual assault awareness.
County Administrator Tabatha R. Perry read a proclamation declaring April 12–18, 2026, as National Public Safety Telecommunicator’s Week; the Commission approved the proclamation on a motion by Commissioner Samuel R. Nolte, seconded by Commissioner Douglas K. Bush.
At 9:30 a.m., Lori Ulderich Harvey, director of the Upshur County Family Resource Network, presented a proclamation declaring April 2026 as Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month. Harvey emphasized the distinction between poverty and abuse, stating, "A family living in poverty is not child abuse as long as the children’s basic needs for food and shelter are being met." The Commission approved that proclamation on a motion by Nolte and seconded by Bush.
Representatives Sandra Marfield and Addie Helmick of Centers Against Violence briefed commissioners on planned outreach and awareness activities and the Commission approved a proclamation declaring April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (motion by Doug Bush, seconded by Sam Nolte).
All proclamations passed unanimously. Commissioners said the declarations are intended to support awareness and community outreach efforts by local organizations.
