Burleson’s animal services staff told the City Council on March 12 that they are moving to purchase a temperature-controlled adoption trailer to make off-site adoption events safer and raise the shelter’s profile.
Deanna Phillips, director of community services, said the shelter has been at or above 90% capacity frequently since July 2023 and staff believe an enclosed, climate-controlled trailer would allow them to bring animals to off-site events without requiring extra animal-control officers to handle setup. The trailer would let staff display animals securely and protect them from extreme heat or cold.
Phillips described a fundraising campaign that included business sponsorships, community events (for example, a charity night and a poorly drawn pet-portrait fundraiser), and internal employee efforts. Staff said their fundraising left a gap relative to a target purchase price of about $66,000; an anonymous donor then completed the amount needed to purchase the trailer. Staff are working with purchasing to secure the most cost-effective procurement method and said any savings would be returned to shelter programs.
Council asked questions about timing and whether the trailer could be in service for peak adoption months; staff said they hope to complete purchase and have the trailer available for summer events.
