Weslaco, school board discuss regional detention fixes and demand contractor corrective action at stadium site

At a June 5 joint workshop, city and school district officials discussed regional detention facilities (RDFs), a drainage ditch behind Silva Middle School and problems reported at Bobby Lackey Stadium, and they said the city has taken steps to force contractor corrections.

The mayor said the city will work with the district to widen or deepen a canal behind Silva and to clarify right‑of‑way so crews can design maintenance access and detention capacity without encroaching on school areas. Public Works staff explained the city needs to determine where city property ends and school property begins before final designs.

School representatives raised concerns that topsoil and irrigation were not delivered or handed over properly after construction; the mayor said the city drafted a letter to the contractor and demanded a corrective‑action plan by next Wednesday. "I drafted a letter to the contractor... they need to get it fixed, and they need to give us a corrective action plan by next Wednesday," one official said (district/city representative).

Officials also discussed irrigation handover and agreed to confirm whether irrigation systems have been transferred to district management. The mayor affirmed the city’s commitment to maintain the RDF under the existing contract terms and to coordinate follow‑ups with district staff and Precinct 1.

No formal enforcement action beyond the written demand for corrective action was recorded at the workshop; staff said they would meet on site and follow up with a corrective plan and timeline.
