Cheltenham School District honors teacher Elizabeth Bonnell for classroom innovation and student support

Dr. Brian W. Scribe, superintendent of the Cheltenham School District, presented a surprise proclamation in March 2026 honoring teacher Elizabeth Bonnell for her work supporting students with complex communication needs. "We started something new this year where we're randomly going around and surprising teachers who have been nominated for exceptional service, and today is your day," Scribe said as he announced the recognition.

The proclamation names the district’s commitment to ensuring every student experiences “belonging, becoming, and excelling,” and cites Bonnell for winning an Innovative Educators grant that supplied augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices to bridge classroom communication gaps. According to the proclamation read aloud by Scribe, Bonnell also completed "rigorous training in verbal behavior" and intensive teaching aimed at better serving students with autism.

Scribe praised Bonnell’s classroom methods and student-centered approach, saying she turns "theoretical knowledge into daily classroom triumphs through constant assessment and heartfelt celebration of every student's individual success." The proclamation added: "They change lives," a line Scribe used to summarize the district’s view of outstanding teaching.

The document also highlighted Bonnell’s willingness to use play and humor to boost engagement, stating that she fosters growth in communication, academics and behavior development. The proclamation was presented to Bonnell with a certificate and a care package; Scribe noted that Dr. Thomas would present a certificate during the visit.

The proclamation is dated March 2026. The superintendent concluded the brief ceremony by congratulating Bonnell and inviting those present to take a photograph to mark the recognition.
