Burleson to end interlocal with Tarrant County and take over septic permitting and inspections

The Burleson City Council voted unanimously March 24 to terminate an interlocal agreement with Tarrant County that had delegated permitting and inspection of certain on-site sewage disposal systems to the county.
Deputy Director Lisa Duelo explained the change in the context of new Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) reporting requirements. “Tarrant County kind of requested us to do this,” Duelo said, describing that the mixed-county jurisdiction and new reporting rules made an internal change sensible. She told council Burleson permitted about 30 systems in the last two years and that nearly all prior actions were within the Johnson County portion of the city; Tarrant County asked the city to review options.
Staff plans to provide a 90‑day termination notice and begin administering permitting and inspections for eligible systems, with ordinance updates planned for the fall and a fee-schedule amendment coming for council consideration on April 7 and second reading in late May. Duelo said development services has qualified staff to run the program and will meet with installers and engineers before implementation.
Council approved the resolution directing staff to terminate the interlocal and take the necessary administrative steps; the motion carried unanimously.
