Burleson council members on April 21 approved a $320,000 contract (with a $32,000 contingency) for Land Design to produce phase 1 schematic design for the city’s new community park at the intersection of Alsbury and Hulen.
Parks staff said the city owns roughly 55 acres at the site and described broad public engagement — three stakeholder meetings, an open house with about 120 attendees and more than 1,000 online survey responses — that informed the master plan. Consultant Heath Kendrick of Land Design described a phased approach that prioritizes infrastructure in phase 1 (access road, parking, trails, utility readiness) and leaves features such as restrooms and full sewer service to later phases. “This is Burleson. This is your voice,” Kendrick said, describing the park’s mix of inclusive playgrounds, event lawns, fishing piers, trails and sports fields.
Staff proposed splitting the design cost between two funds (4A and 4B) with $176,000 charged to each; the contract includes a 10% contingency. Council members asked about conduit for future field lighting and details about parking and temporary toilets for early phases. Staff said design work would begin in May and construction could start this winter with a ribbon cutting expected the following spring if schedules hold.
A motion to approve the design contract passed unanimously. Staff will bring construction phasing and funding specifics back to council as design proceeds.
