Local animal-welfare group urges Weselco to back county ban on roadside animal sales

A representative of a local animal-welfare group urged the Weselco City Commission to endorse a county ordinance banning roadside sales of live animals and to send a written letter of support to Hidalgo County officials.
"Paws for Help is a 501(c)(3) volunteer advocacy group advocating for companion animals," said Dendia Baie during the public-comment period. Baie asked the city to "send a letter of support via email" to Hidalgo County, saying the group has collected mayoral support from more than half of Hidalgo County's mayors and that HB 2007 passed in June and "becomes law September 1." She told commissioners that roadside and flea-market sales drive impulse purchases of animals, contribute to disease and abandonment, and increase shelter intake and municipal costs.
City staff accepted Baie's written materials for the record and said they would make sure the packet reached the appropriate offices. The mayor thanked the speaker and the public-comment period closed.
Baie asked specifically for a formal acknowledgment of the city's support in writing to assist county-level action; commissioners did not take a formal vote on the request during the meeting.
