The Burleson 4A Economic Development Corporation on Wednesday voted unanimously to recommend a $320,000 contract with Land Design Inc. for schematic design of phase 1 of a planned community park.
Jen Basham, the project's presenter, summarized a public engagement process that began in February 2024, including four stakeholder meetings and an online survey that drew about 1,000 responses. "We received over 120 people showed up" for in-person sessions and the online survey had "right around 1,000 survey responses," Basham said, and she displayed community priorities from a word cloud.
Phase 1 will focus on pond improvements for stormwater management, three full-size softball fields with 300-foot outfields, irrigation taps, a park road, parking and a food-truck park. Basham said electrical service, main water and sewer utilities are not included in phase 1 and would be provided in later phases.
Basham presented the contract amount and funding split: a $320,000 contract with a 10% contingency, which she said would be split evenly between 4A and 4B boards—about $176,000 each. "So the total contract that we're presenting is for 320,000 with a 10% contingency," she said.
Board members raised concerns about stormwater runoff near an elevated railroad and asked consultants to confirm drainage plans; Basham said consultants had already studied those issues and were available to speak to them.
Alexa moved and Phil seconded the resolution recommending the Land Design Inc. contract; the chair recorded the motion and the recommendation passed by a unanimous vote. If 4A, 4B and council approve the contract, Basham said design would begin in May, construction would start in fall/winter and phase 1 would open in spring of next year.
