Weslaco commission approves RFQ for $26M airport runway extension and hangar project

The Weslaco City Commission on Nov. 4 approved staff’s request to solicit requests for qualifications (RFQs) for professional engineering services tied to a $26 million TxDOT grant to extend the runway and construct a new hangar, including burying a north‑side irrigation canal to improve drainage.
Assistant City Manager Omar Rodriguez and staff said the procurement will be a multi‑year, multi‑project effort and will follow TxDOT procurement and Federal Aviation Administration requirements. The RFQ is tentatively scheduled for advertisement beginning Dec. 3, pending final review with TxDOT.
Staff said the scope will include airport‑specific engineering, FAA compliance, project management and coordination with local irrigation districts for canal work. Commissioners approved the solicitation and asked staff to proceed with the RFQ and return with the procurement schedule and subsequent award recommendations.
The action authorizes staff to begin the RFQ process; formal engineering selection and contract awards will come to the commission for final approvals.
