Commission weighs speed humps in Garden Terrace and a targeted sidewalk study with Weslaco ISD

City staff described a traffic-calming plan and a separate sidewalk planning step for school routes during the June 17 workshop of the Weslaco City Commission.
Peter, a city staff member, told commissioners an initial speed study identified three locations around Garden Terrace — West Cherry Blossom Circle (east and west) and 13th Street — and recommended full-width, six-foot speed humps about 3–4 inches high. "The recommendation is to provide on all four streets including 13th Street as well," Peter said.
Commissioners asked whether humps would span full roadway widths on the wider 13th Street; staff confirmed the humps would be full width. Staff also said the city would fabricate humps in-house to lower cost rather than install pre-manufactured factory units.
Separately, the mayor and commissioners discussed partnering with Weslaco ISD on a pedestrian-study to identify where students walk so sidewalks are built where needed. The mayor said the purpose is to avoid "putting sidewalks where they're not used" and to prioritize locations where students routinely walk to school.
Commissioner comments noted earlier sidewalk work near Northbridge already included some routes; county-owned segments and other areas may require coordination with county commissioners. Staff said routine concrete and flat work is covered by an existing supplier/work-order contract, but several projects exceed the city manager’s approval threshold and were brought to the commission for authorization.
What happens next: staff will proceed with detailed plans and return any contract or budget items above administrative limits to the commission for formal approval.
