Burleson asks Johnson County appraisal district to reappraise commercial property more frequently

The Burleson City Council unanimously approved a resolution asking the board of the Central Appraisal District (CAD) of Johnson County to revisit its reappraisal plan for commercial property and consider more frequent revaluations.
Deputy City Manager Harlan Jefferson presented staff analysis showing that, in CAD staff stratification reports, Burleson’s commercial property values trailed residential values and that a three‑year reappraisal schedule could leave commercial properties undervalued relative to the market. Jefferson presented illustrative revenue impacts under limited data samples that, when applied to the full tax base, suggested material shifts in taxable value for commercial property and potential impacts to city, school and county revenue.
Jefferson cautioned the data set was small for commercial sales and said the staff’s recommendation was to request more frequent reappraisals to ensure equity and accuracy. Council members praised the analysis and approved the resolution asking the CAD board to consider a reappraisal plan that treats commercial property differently than the broader three‑year approach. Staff said it would coordinate with neighboring jurisdictions and the CAD board on next steps.
